Brand New HostingEh Website

Good Morning Everyone!

You may have noticed something a little different about the HostingEh Website this morning. We’ve had a bit of a makeover! We worked with a designer to get a look and feel that not only looks miles better than the old web site did, but actually tells people about us, our services, and our customers.

The company is growing each and every day, and this website overhaul was long overdue. We’re so happy to see it live and we hope you’ll all like it too!

We thank you all so much for your support over the years and could not ask for better clients!

To celebrate the launch of our new web site, you can use coupon code Makeover2019 and get 10% off any of our services!

Let’s make this year the best year yet!

So Incredibly Thankful

Well hello there everyone!

I wanted to take the time to write out a proper blog post about why we do what we do at HostingEh.com and to let you all know how thankful we are for each and every one of you.

I sometimes think to myself about all of the people we’ve migrated to our hosting platforms from other hosts and about why it is they left their original host in the first place. Before I got into this game, I had sites and servers with all kinds of hosts and generally had good experiences for the most part and now almost 15 years later I’ve seen the landscape change into a massive cash grab. $5.99 per email address, $20 a month for 5GB of web space. Honestly it is absolutely atrocious what some hosts charge for.

People have asked me why I charge to move customers on to our services. The answer is simple. We’re a relatively small business, we spend a lot of time on migrations (some hosts don’t give up customer files and whatnot easily.) and it shows us that the customer is truly interested in moving. We also offer a level of technical expertise and support that almost no other host offers.

If you don’t believe me, ask any one of the clients we host. Ask them why they refer friends, ask them why they stick around year after year, ask them how long they’ve had to wait for help with an issue. We don’t hide anything and we are upfront about what we charge and why.

After dealing with a few different hosts while helping customers migrate, we’ve seen a lot of hosts that violate some pretty golden rules of running a web site.

Register your domain yourself

This one needs to be said. DO NOT let your host register your domain for you or transfer it to them. This gives them complete control over your name and if you decide to leave, they can make that process hell.

Maintain Access to YOUR Files

Your web site is comprised of YOUR files. As such, your host should provide you with FTP, SFTP or some way of accessing the files that run your web site. We’ve seen a few hosts that do not provide any way, shape, or form for their customers to access their files and claim it’s a security issue or something to that effect.

The only time it’s a a security issue is if the server you’re hosted on isn’t properly secured.

Paying for SSL Certificates

There are a couple free SSL providers out there and a lot of hosts are using them. If you request they install an SSL certificate and they charge you for it, make sure you’re getting a proper paid SSL certificate. Let’s Encrypt and Comodo offer free options, and we offer them to all customers free of charge as any host should. If your host charges you for let’s encrypt certificates, they should be ashamed.

In the end, you select your host. Make sure to ask questions and if ever you need advice, please reach out to us and we’ll guide you. Even if you don’t host with us! Advice is free.

Thank you so much for being a customer and if you’re not a customer, thanks for reading!

Still Motoring Into 2017

Good Morning!

It’s been a while since I’ve posted on the blog, however I felt like it was time for an update with HostingEh and where we are today.

HostingEh has been around in one for or another for 8 years now. In that time we’ve continuously grown in size and capacity and we continue to bring our customers along for the ride.

We now have servers in two different countries and 4 different data centers. We hav daily backups that we include with every hosting plan free of charge. We also offer free SSL certificates using a variety of providers such as Let’s Encrypt and cPanel SSL Authority.

In the coming months we will be expanding once again and shifting some resources around so continue to offer the best pricing and service to our customers.

Have a great summer folks and if ever you need anything, you know who to ask!

Slow Load Times? Could be your ad network!

On a typical WordPress blog we can optimize the following factors:

  • Caching images and pages
  • Apache response times
  • Cloudflare / CDN delivery of most scripts and css

This will ensure a snappy and speedy loading site, however when it comes to ad networks there are some issues.

Ad Server Latency

The trip from the advertisers server to our server is a factor in load time. We have servers in Montreal and Atlanta (East Coast). A lot of advertisers run out of the west coast or every worse, overseas! This can affect how fast your site loads and should be checked with your ad networks.

Poorly Coded Ads

Ad code that advertising networks provide you with should be examined by a programmer / developer / system admin to determine if it will impact your load time. If the ad code is poorly written, it can have an affect on your load times.

Non Asynchronous Scripts

What does asynchronous mean?

In computer programs, asynchronous operation means that a process operates independently of other processes, whereas synchronous operation means that the process runs only as a result of some other process being completed or handing off operation. A typical activity that might use a synchronous protocol would be a transmission of files from one point to another. As each transmission is received, a response is returned indicating success or the need to resend. Each successive transmission of data requires a response to the previous transmission before a new one can be initiated.

What this means is that if your page has to wait on your ad code to run a bunch of scripts, then your load time suffers as a result of poor planning from your advertisers.

Generally speaking, you should have a chat with your advertisers or ad networks and ask them a few things:

  • Where is your ad code served from?
  • Is your ad code asynchronous?
  • What is required for me to display your ads?

Along with all the other millions of questions you probably had when getting started with an ad network.

Let’s use an example from one of our clients

http://www.CraftberryBush.com

I am simply looking at load times here with ads and without ads.

Loading with an Ad Blocker Enabled

Craftberry Bush loaded with an ad blocker enabled.

Craftberry Bush loaded with an ad blocker enabled.

As you can see with the image above, the page loads in a little over a second.

Loading without an Ad Blocker Enabled

Craftberry Bush loaded without Ad Blocker

Craftberry Bush loaded without Ad Blocker

While I was able to get a 23 second load time in the test above, several of my tests actually ran longer than five minutes as the ad network tried to load ads that either no longer existed, or were served from a server that was not responding at the time.

In the end

Advertisers help keep your site running and provide you with additional income from running a blog. Just be careful that you’re not sacrificing the quality and speed of your site to do so, as your readership will surely drop off.

Handling Viral Posts

Every now and then one of our clients will amaze us by bringing in some massive traffic numbers both in terms of bandwidth, and in terms of processing power.

Just this weekend we had one of our newer clients absolutely dominate our main shared hosting node due to one of her posts going incredibly viral. In fact the post is doing so well and amassing such a following that even today we are still seeing big numbers and are working with her to ensure that her site stays up and her comments get approved while she is on a plane to somewhere warm (LUCKY!).

Her main blog was hosted on our shared node with approximately 24 other customers who were all affected by this massive spike in traffic. We were able to keep all clients sites responsive (however very slow to load) while we migrated the client to her own dedicated server solution with very little downtime if any.

To give you an idea of the volume this particular client at one point had over 1000 active users on her blog and sustained this volume for almost 24 hours! Congratulations to our clients on having some incredibly successful blogs!

We’re proud to host some of Canada’s finest bloggers, and to keep them up even when other hosts have let them down!
